The assumption behind child-placement is that the safety and living conditions of a child improve. These cases demonstrate that this assumption is often invalid.

Seven-year-old boy, adopted from Russia by Torry Ann Hansen, in 2009, was sent to Moscow by his adoptive mother. The boy was put on an airplane without any supervision, with a note for the Russian Ministry of Education, stating the adoptive mother returned the boy to Russian guardianship and wants to see the adoption annulled.

Prior to his adoption, Artem lived in Partizansk Detskie Dom in Primorsky Krai.

Dennis was born Russia and adopted by Russian citizens in 2003. In 2004 he was left by his adoptive parents in the Dominican Republic with an unrelated man. Denis ended up in a Orphanage in DR until he was returned to Russia in 2010

12-year-old girl placed with Todd and Lisa Mortensen was sexually abused by her "foster father". The placement was a private arrangement with the adoptive family of the girl.

In 2004, Todd Mortensen was charged with 65 counts of criminal sexual penetration and 20 counts of criminal sexual contact against another girl placed with his family. All 85 counts were dismissed by the prosecutor in 2005 because the girl was deemed mentally unstable to testify.

3-year-old boy adopted by Michelle Dosdall, died of blunt-force trauma to the head. His adoptive mother was charged with murder.

2 (or more) girls from Ethiopia, adopted by Lon and DeAnna Kennard in the 1994 and 1995, were sexually abused by their adoptive father. Kennards adopted 4 girls and 2 boys from Ethiopia and had 5 older living bio children. Lon also sexually abused at least one of his bio daughters.

The Kennards were founders of the charity/adoption facilitator Village of Hope. At the time the abuse started Lon Harvey Kennard, Sr was Bishop of the LDS Church.
DeAnna B Kennard filed for divorce three days after Lon Harvey Kennard, Sr. was charged. Lon plead guilty to aggravated sex abuse of a child.

5-year-old girl adopted by Gary and Leslie Erickson was taken into the hospital with blunt force head trauma. Leslie Erickson was arrested on suspicion of abuse.

Three-year-old boy, adopted from China, by Philip and Michele Stein, in November 2009, suffered severe head trauma, and ended up in a coma. Michele Stein was charged with abuse. In January, Adam had been hospitalized with burns on his hands.

Cao Thi Luong and Cao Thi Lan Cao Thi Luong and Cao Thi Lan siblings aged about 3 and 8

In 2005 or 2006, 13 children were solicited from families of the ethnic minority Ruc hill tribe in rural Quang Binh provice. The Ruc families were told the children would be fed and educated at the Nuturing/Social Welfare Center in Dong Hoi until the family situation improved. When families visited their children, they discovered they'd been adopted internationally.

Also mentioned are siblings Cao Duc Muoi and Cau Duc Buoi aged between 7 and 10 at the time.

11 children in care of Keith Lashbrook, at a Globe International orphanage called "In the Father’s Hands Children’s Home" in Port-de-Paix, Haiti, were allegedly sexually abused by their missionary care-givers. The children were adopted by American families who filed charges against Lashbrook and Globe International.

10-year-old boy adopted by Tammy Renea Andrews was allegedly tortured by his adoptive mother. The boy was repeatedly hit with the fist, a small baseball bat and a hammer. He was hog tied, and his tongue was pinched with a staple puller.

Tammy Andrews took the boy out of school to homeschool him.
