Maharashtra Police have arrested the director of the Pune-based orphanage Gurukul Godavari Balak Ashram for selling a baby for one lakh rupees to a couple in Mumbai.
Mathew Yanmal was detained on charges of giving away an HIV-affected child to a couple for adoption without having the authority to do so.
The couple, Arun and Anita Yadav, had filed a complaint against the Pune-based orphanage Gurukul Godavari Balak Ashram for prompting and duping them to adopt an HIV-affected child without informing them.
"The child was HIV positive and the children's home did not share it with us. The child died during treatment. The complainant said they were cheated. In this regard we have arrested the director," said Dilip Sawant, Senior Police Inspector, Yerwada Police Station, Pune.
Police also said that the home did not have the mandatory permission and license to run an adoption centre. (ANI)
