The letter sent by Guenther Verheugen to premier Adrian Nastase does not
include warnings to block EU pre-accession funds or to suspend EU entry
talks with Romania, as written in the foreign press, said European
Commission spokesman Diego de Ojeda quoted by Rompres news agency. He
said the European institutions would take a decision based on the
information they got from the authorities in Bucharest. Diego de Ojeda
said the EU executive authorities wanted the moratorium to stay in force
until the adoption of a proper legislation on child adoption in Romania.
Nastase on Wednesday admitted to have received a letter from the
European Commissioner for Enlargement but refused to give details on the
document without the approval of Guenther Verheugen. The premier said he
had answered to the European official. Minister for European Integration
Alexandru Farcas on the other hand said the letter sent by Verheugen was
still being assessed by the government who would send a detailed answer
to the European institutions as soon as possible. Commissioner
Verheugen's spokesman Christophe Filori told our reporters he had not
received an answer from the Romanian executive. The letter signed by
Guenther Verheugen requested complete clarifications and information on
the children adopted abroad in breach of the moratorium, said Filori who
declined to give further details on the content of the document.
