Couple Will Face Trial In Slave Case
DETROIT, -- A Farmington Hills, Mich. couple will face trial as a result of allegations by their live-in babysitter that she was kept as a slave and forced to have sex with the husband.
The girl, who's name has not bee released, is a native of Cameroon, Africa, and allegedly came to the Detroit area to help Joseph and Evelyn Djoumessi care for their children.
The girl said that she believed she was going to be able to attend school in return for babysitting the children.
However, instead of going to school she claims that she was forced to live in the couple's basement, beaten and forced to care for the family. She also claims that Joseph Djoumessi began forcing her to have sex with him two years ago, when she was 15.
A Third Circuit Court judge ruled Wednesday that there was not enough evidence to hold the Djoumessies on kidnapping charges, but did add a charge of child abuse against the couple and ordered them to stand trial.
No trial date has been set.
