NEW YORK - Treasury Secretary Donald Regan who has four children was named National Father of the Year on Tuesday by the National Father's Day Committee.

"Today you hear n lot about the breakdown in family life," Regan said "But anyone who accepts the responsibility of being a parent has the obligation and the duty to rear that child properly."

Father of the Year Honors List, They were performer Alan King. New York Metz manager George Bamberger, Gov. John Y. Brown of Kentucky, television personality Hugh Downs. New York City

policeman William Fox, radio personality John Gambling, Remington Products owner Victor Kiam. golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez and actor Marino

Kiam, father of three said: "The role of the father is much more important now" because "we've become a much more materialistic society".

Fox, a bachelor who saved a 17-year-old boy. Michael Buchanan. from committing suicide and later became his guardian until the youth found

his natural mother. said. "The Image of the father must be maintained in today's society .. but there are no quick answers. You have to talk to

them."

The Father's Day Committee describes Itself as a non-profit organization which creates awareness of Father's Day.
