A fugitive mother convicted four years ago in the murder of a 20-month-old girl in El Paso was captured Monday in Mexico City and was awaiting extradition, the Southwest Border Fugitive Task Force said.
Martha Melendez, now 29, was out on bond when she disappeared before a jury's guilty verdict in 2000.
Melendez was sentenced to life in prison for the death of Breianna Melendez, a relative's daughter she was raising as her own. Breianna died of head injuries.
