History of LIMIAR

LIMIAR was founded by Nancy Cameron in 1984 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It grew out of a pioneering work of Nancy to develop a program, with the support and counsel of the State of Sao Paulo Court of Minors and the State of Sao Paulo Child Welfare Foundation, to organize and administer the international adoption of children who had little or no chance of being adopted into permanent Brazilian homes. The project was called “Project of the Americas”. Since the beginning, over 1700 children have found permanent homes with international parents from countries such as the United States, Canada, Holland, Great Britain, Denmark and many others. Because of its experience, LIMIAR can uniquely advise foreign families through the complexities of legal procedures so that a proposed adoption can be concluded efficiently, without the use of intermediaries / attorneys, and in accordance with the adoption and immigration laws of each country. Today, LIMIAR has offices in four Brazilian states, Sao Paulo, Parana, Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco. Limiar also has an orphanage for orphans and special needs children with physical handicaps for up to 25 children in Sao Paulo.

LIMIAR is a non-profit, non-governmental Brazilian organization which advocates for children. The Portuguese word, limiar, refers to the threshold of a doorway, symbolizing the act of crossing over to a new beginning, for the many needy children helped by LIMIAR.

Some ways that LIMIAR advocates for needy children:

* Sheltering 25 abandoned and special needs children in CASA LIMAR

*Providing children with specialized medical care, surgery, psychological orientation and physical therapy

*Giving scholarships to adolescents to pursue pre-professional classes

*Providing funds for basic needs and medication for disabled and sickly children in poor families so institutionalization is avoided

LIMIAR is non-profit and maintained through voluntary contributions

LIMIAR is non-governmental, non-affiliated, and does not have a political philosophy. It is non-sectarian organization, but subscribes to and follows the Christian faith

LIMIAR is child-centered. It represents the child and upholds the child’s interest as its main concern. It’s only goal is the betterment of needy children;s conditions TODAY
