Mom gives up fight for baby

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A woman whose fight to reclaim the baby she gave up at a home for unwed mothers became a symbol for adoption reform activists says she is giving up the battle because she has run out of money and doesn't think she can win.

"I don't think I have much of a chance anymore," said Barbara Landry, 20, of New York City, after learning the Texas Supreme Court had rejected her case Wednesday.

But Landry, who claims she was unfairly pressured into giving up the baby, said she will return to Fort Worth in about a week to picket the home, in a protest to coincide with first birthday of the child.

The legal battle began after Landry attempted to revoke an affidavit terminating her parental rights. She said she wanted her baby, but officials of the Edna Gladney Home said the infant was no longer hers and had been placed with a couple planning to adopt the child.
