Parents Face Charges in Child's Death
The death of toddler in North Mississippi is being investigated as a homicide, and Union County officials are trying to decide whether the girl's adoptive parents will face charges.
Deputies raided the home of Janet and Ramone Barreto near New Albany on Sunday after receiving a tip about abuse. Anna Barreto, 2, was taken to a hospital and placed on life support. She died Tuesday morning.
The Department of Human Services took eight children from the home. Two were the couple's biological children; the other six were from foreign countries.
Officials with DHS say there is reason to believe some or all of the children may have been sexually abused.
Authorities also discovered a what they descibed as a puppy mill in the couple's back yard with 180 dogs, 25 cats, and several ducks in unsanitary conditions.
In addition to homicide and abuse charges, the couple could face more than 100 counts of animal cruelty.
