A Dallas woman was arrested Friday morning on a charge of capital murder in the death of her 15-month-old son in what authorities say appears to be a case of the toddler being violently shaken.

Kelly Wingo, 30, was alone with the boy, Jackson Wingo, at the time he was injured Aug. 30, said Sgt. Brenda Nichols, head of the child abuse squad.

"He had massive head trauma," Sgt. Nichols said of Jackson, who died Sept. 2 after being taken off life support.

Dr. Matthew Cox, a physician at Children's Medical Center Dallas, found that the child had suffered a "fatal head injury" that left him with internal bleeding and swelling of the brain, records state.

Mrs. Wingo told police that on Aug. 30 she briefly left Jackson alone in a room of their home so she could let in the dog. When she returned, they boy was lying limp on the floor "with his eyes half-opened," according to records.

"Suspect said she shook the complainant and said, 'What's wrong, what's wrong?' " according to the police report. "Suspect said she called 911 because complainant was not responding to her."

Mrs. Wingo was at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center late Friday with her bail set at $500,000.
