DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― At 6 months old, Jackson Wingo was adopted and brought to this country from Guatemala. He was given the chance to live an American middle class life. Now, the 15-month-old child is dead, and his Dallas adoptive mother was arrested, accused of murdering the young boy.
Vernon Hale of the Dallas Police Department explained, "The mother stated that she had left the room for a few seconds. When she returned, the baby had fallen down and was unresponsive to her."
Jackson was taken to the hospital and died a few days later of a brain hemorrhage.
Police do not believe that the child's injuries were an accident, and the only person home with Jackson at the time was his mother.
Hale said, "Doctors and the medical examiner believe that the child did suffer blunt force trauma and that the child did not die of any natural causes."
Police arrived at Wingo's home early Friday morning. They went inside and came out with 30-year-old Kelly Wingo, the boy's adoptive mother. She has been charged with capital murder.
This is the first time that police or Child Protective Services have investigated this particular family.
