NEW TRIAL REQUESTED BY COUPLE ACCUSED OF MISTREATING CHILDREN
December 5, 1995
Seatle P-I
Dennis and Diane Nason, accused in a yearlong trial of mistreating some of the dozens of disabled children they adopted, are seeking a new trial after being convicted of racketeering and forgery.
The ``Celebration Family" couple has filed motions asking Circuit Judge Michael Sullivan to overturn convictions on seven counts each of forgery and one count each of racketeering. Defense lawyers say the evidence doesn't support the charges.
The Nasons' trial lasted a year and cost $3 million, making it the longest and likely the most expensive in Oregon history. They were acquitted of the more serious charges of manslaughter, criminal mistreatment and grand theft.
