grants quickie divorce
Madonna had previously brought son David Banda (3) home from the African country when he was just one year old amidst much controversy.
And now she wants to find him a sister from his native land and has chosen four-year-old orphan Mercy James.
But Mercy's grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa (61) told ‘The Sun’: “Why doesn’t this singer pick other children? It is stealing. I want to go to court, I won’t let her go.”
British kids' charity ‘Save the Children’ wants to prevent the Queen of Pop from going through with the adoption, saying that it is better for orphaned youngsters to grow up in their country near to their extended family.
They are especially concerned that Madonna is divorced, which goes against Malawi adoption regulations. Will Madonna get a special celebrity allowance?
Mercy’s mother died shortly after giving birth to her, at 18 years old. It is not known who the father of the little girl is.
Madonna was in court in Malawi on Monday to start the ball rolling for the adoption process.
The singer travelled to the village of Chinkhota on Sunday, where she has bought a large piece of land on which she plans to build a girls’ school.
But it seems local residents are less than happy about the singer’s decision.
Mum-of-four Esinati Nkhoma told People magazine: "We are told to leave our gardens after this year's harvest, we are told our houses are to be pulled down – but nobody is talking about compensation. Where will we move to?"
Madonna has two biological children - Lourdes (12) from a relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon, and Rocco (8) from her marriage to Guy Ritchie.
The singer is currently dating Brazilian model Jesus Luz, who was reportedly spotted cheating on her at a recent party in Rio.
