Nigerians and indeed, Africans at large have been asked to pay adequate attention concerning the issue of child adoption so as to use the same to change the lives of underprivileged children in society.
The plea was made by Mrs. Peace Anyiam-Fiberesima, CEO, African Film Academy (AFA) during a press briefing to announce the launch of Africadopt project scheduled for April 1, 2009 in Lagos .
Mrs. Fiberesima said that the academy will in conjunction with Jata Logistic hold the Adopt-A-Child Charity Benefit concert with the hope of creating awareness and drawing attention to the issue of child adoption, adding that the evening will feature showbiz icons, international film stars and corporate titans.
She further added that the project was initiated by AFA, the organizers of the yearly African Movie Academy Awards, because it has been observed that the age-long tradition of a child being the responsibility of the community had waned, nothing that “we therefore want to sensitize and promote the life changing process of adoption, and encourage governments, corporate bodies and individuals to support the initiative which will help to rid the streets of social misfits and ill-trained children.
