The baby, who was sold by his mother to pay for the delivery, has now been reunited.
Rajitha had sold her one-day-old baby boy because the hospital where she underwent a C-section demanded money and she had no means to pay that. However, now, Rajitha is being handed over the one-day-old baby boy.
The 20-year-old singlemother says she had no money to pay the Rs 2200 demanded by the Kothagudem government hospital staff where she underwent a caesarean operation.
On being asked, whom did she give the money to, Ranjitha said, "To Dr Shankaraiah."
The couple which bought the baby has been arrested. A case is also being booked against the mother. The hospital staff is also being investigated for demanding money.
"She says for anaesthesia, they demanded 1200 rupees and again they asked for 1000 rupees. That she sold baby because she has no money," said Rajaram, district official.
Social observers say it is ironic that this shocking incident happened in the district from where the women and child welfare minister was elected MP.
The mother and child have been offered shelter in a government-run home and the mother is being counselled after which she can decide if she still wants to give the baby away in adoption.
