About two adopted children are abandoned daily by their Korean families because of domestic problems or ``inevitable circumstances in the family,'' a professor said at a forum.

At a seminar held by overseas adoptees' group TRACK and the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, Huh said children who are rejected enter a period of extreme stress caused by trauma relating to the abandonment.

The current adoption process of requesting a simple consensus between children and parents, as well as registration, places the children in a vulnerable position, he said.
``At the moment, the government collects no data from families abandoning the children. However, if the government wants to push domestic adoption, it must first come up with measures,'' he said.
There were 1,388 cases of domestic adoption in 2008, outnumbering that of overseas adoption, which stood at 1,264.
In reaction to calls for a revision of the rules on adoption, the ministry remains negative. ``It will be difficult to change related laws any time soon as we have to collect all opinions from related government agencies and other interest groups in the private sector,'' said Park Chan-soo, an official at the ministry.
