A blind Spanish couple and three Chileans were indicted Saturday on illegal adoption charges.

Santiago Judge Rosa Maria Pinto said she ordered the five people jailed until legal procedures start next week.

Indicted by Judge Pinto were Spaniards Francisco Gil Acosta, 47, and Maria Mateo Baez, 42, both blind, who were detained last Monday at the Santiago airport as they prepared to take a flight to Madrid carrying a three-year old baby.

Police said they became suspicious after one airport officer recalled the couple did not have a baby when they arrived in Chile a month earlier.
