A GROUP of mothers who began fundraising for disabled Romanian orphans while living together in an Islington warehouse are set to celebrate reaching their £50,000 target.
The six mothers were living together in Nile Street, off City Road, Hoxton, in 2007 when they were shaken to their core by the disturbing images in a documentary.
They got in touch with Foundation for the Relief of Disabled Orphans (Frodo) - a UK registered charity working in Romania to provide medical treatment for disabled orphans and abandoned children - and decided to do what they could to help.
After a year of hard work Mums for Good, as they are known, have now hit their target, but the fundraising will continue with an auction of trendy goods at tonight's party at Shoreditch House, in Ebor Street, Shoreditch.
One of the mums, Laura Hughes, who now lives in Northampton Park, Canonbury, said: "We thought carefully how we could help the 9,000 babies who are abandoned every year in Romania. We wanted to grab each one of them and take it out of the institutions, but this is a dream.
"What we're doing with the money is setting up a project to prevent the abandonment of Romanian babies. Frodo will establish a family support unit in a Romanian maternity hospital, whose aim is to help the mothers so they won't leave their babies in the hospital, and provide them with support thereafter.
"We're very grateful to our supporters, friends and family for helping us reach our target of £50,000.
