Big jump in adoption fees

The State Government is more than tripling the fee it charges Tasmanians who want to adopt children born overseas.

The Children's Minister, Michelle O'Byrne, told budget estimates people applying to adopt a child from another country will be charged an $8,000 fee, up from $2,500.

The fee increase is part of measures to fill the budget black hole.

Ms O'Byrne says the increase is comparable to the rates charged in other states.

She estimates the move will raise $150,000 and encourage more local adoptions.

"We do want to move to a model where Tasmanian children might be given that sort of permanency and security."

The Director of Child Protection, Mark Byrne, says research has found people would consider local adoptions if they are available.

Children in state care are already being assessed for eligibility.

There were 11 international adoptions last year and two in Tasmania.
