Help a Needy Child International (HANCI), established in 1996, set up child survival centers in Freetown and Makeni (in the north) where it offered services of schooling from kindergarten to tertiary level. When civil war broke out, parents sent their children to the organization for protection and after the war, which ended in 2002, parents who came to fetch their children were told they had been adopted.

Two days ago we started the nominations for the Annual Demons of Adoption Awards for the fourth time in succession. An incredibly important Supreme Court decision has come out of India on Monday!

I have no real time to write about it all at the moment, so instead, I'm going to pull a variety of quotes out of some of the articles from the past day or so to lay out the outlines of what has just taken place.

The ruling comes in a case brought by Arun Dohle of Against Child Trafficking or ACT (which has long been listed in my links list. They have been doing critically important human rights work for both adopted people and their families.)

Please note that while the news reports are dismissive of Dohle's "lineage plea," what the court actually ruled was that he would still be able to file a suit for seeking relief.

Certainly not a full victory by any means, ( at least not yet,) but when it comes to establishing the absolute right of Indian adoptees to their documentation, the high court finally gave over full access, rebuffing arguments by the agency/NGO claiming adoptees have no right to such or that their files should be covered by "confidentiality"or "mother's privacy."

Since the 1990s, hundreds of Malian children were were sent to France for adoption, by a French NGO, Rayon de Soleil de l'Enfant Étranger. The Malian parents are searching their children they have lost track of since more than 15 years. They were told they would received news of their children by Rayon de Soleil in Paris, and that their children would be sent to them during their vacations and would returned to them at the age of majority whenever they want.

Céline Giraud, a Frenchwoman born in Peru, was adopted by French parents when she was 16 days old through the NGO, Rayon de Soleil de l'Enfant Étranger. Up to 24 years, she believed that her biological parents had abandoned her for lack of means to raise her. But by finding her birth family in 2004, she discovered that she was stolen from her parents and 25 other Peruvian children adopted in France, Switzerland and Holland in the early 80s, were also stolen from their parents. Her story was written by the French journalist Emily Trevert in her book.

In 2003, a couple in France adopted Oscar and Marlène, aged 5 and 2, from Central African Republic. The adoptive parents were told by the association, Rayon de Soleil de l'enfant étranger, that their mother was dead and their father disappeared. It turns out that they were 10 and 5 years old, and they had living parents and five siblings. The children were told they would study in France and would go back to Africa.

11 other children were adopted from Central African Republic at the same time than Oscar and Marlène without parental consent. Among them, only two had no parent.

Justin McBride and his half brothers Kevin and Kody Baden were adopted by Steven and Jessica Pribbernow in 2005. The couple had previously adopted a boy named Steven Jeffrey Lewis. In 2006 the Pribbernow's divorced and soon after, Jessica Pribbernow married Josh Saylor, while remaining custody over the adopted boys and her two biological daughters.

In the morning of August 4, 2009, Steven Jeffrey went on a stabbing spree, killing Justin McBride and injuring Kevin and Kody Baden. During this episode, Josh Saylor was stabbed as well.
