Sierra Leone - HANCI case
Help a Needy Child International (HANCI), established in 1996, set up child survival centers in Freetown and Makeni (in the north) where it offered services of schooling from kindergarten to tertiary level. When civil war broke out, parents sent their children to the organization for protection and after the war, which ended in 2002, parents who came to fetch their children were told they had been adopted.

Date: 2002-01-01

Number of children: 29

Agencies

Organizations: MAPS (Maine Adoption Placement Services)

Facilitators

Organizations: Help a Needy Child International (HANCI)

Location
Sierra Leone

My daughter in-law taken from Santiago Chile

Our family is looking for anyone who has information on twin girls taken from Santiago, Chile. They lived with Patrica and Denise Zuvic as Patrica's children at the time of the closing of Today's Adoption Agency and placed in an orphanage by the state. Does anyone have any information on this set of twins? If so, please let us know.

Human Rights, as they relate to adoption, family, and children

The more I see articles presenting the arguments for and/or against gay (LGBT) adoption, the more I get annoyed by this mythical notion clouding the minds of the masses, suggesting all people have "the right" to adopt a child. A human right to adopt? Can we please get serious? [This mythical thinking reminds me of the comical illusion created (and perpetuated) by the adoption industry, suggesting <

Looking beyond the demons of adoption

Two days ago we started the nominations for the Annual Demons of Adoption Awards for the fourth time in succession. As much as I like that we do this every year, and how much I love to point out the "bad guys" in adoption, I've also come to realize that the adoption system itself is most evil of all and that pointing out a few "bad guys" is not going to solve the ethical problems related to adoption.

In 2007 Pound Pup Legacy instituted the annual Demons of Adoption Award to raise a voice against adoption propaganda and the self congratulatory practices of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute's annual Angels in Adoption Awards TM.

Until September 30 you can nominate candidates for the fourth annual Demons of Adoption Award, after which we will put up a poll to vote for the nominees. Please add a comment to this post with your nominee and a short explanation why this candidate has the dubious honor of winning the award. You can also email your nomination to this address.

Previous editions:

First Annual Demons of Adoption Awards (award went to the National Council for Adoption)
Second Annual Demons of Adoption Awards (award went to the makers of Juno)
Third Annual Demons of Adoption Awards (award went to Bethany Christian Services)

Tarquin Craig Thomas, a UK citizen living in the US, sexually abused a 9 yr old Oregon boy in his care. The abuse was immediate and daily after the boy entered his care in 2005. Pornographic images, including bestiality, of other children he 'mentored' were found in his home.

Date: 2007-05-24

Placement type: Foster care

Type of abuse: Sexual abuse

Abuser: Foster father

Location
San Mateo, California
United States

See map: Google Maps

Survey for individuals who were adopted

Hi,

My name is Colleen Colaner and I am a doctoral student in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I am doing research on how adoptive parents talked to their children about adoption, and I’m looking for people who would be interested in filling out a survey for me.

Massive (partial) victory for adoptees from India and their human rights!

An incredibly important Supreme Court decision has come out of India on Monday!

I have no real time to write about it all at the moment, so instead, I'm going to pull a variety of quotes out of some of the articles from the past day or so to lay out the outlines of what has just taken place.

The ruling comes in a case brought by Arun Dohle of Against Child Trafficking or ACT (which has long been listed in my links list. They have been doing critically important human rights work for both adopted people and their families.)

Please note that while the news reports are dismissive of Dohle's "lineage plea," what the court actually ruled was that he would still be able to file a suit for seeking relief.

Certainly not a full victory by any means, ( at least not yet,) but when it comes to establishing the absolute right of Indian adoptees to their documentation, the high court finally gave over full access, rebuffing arguments by the agency/NGO claiming adoptees have no right to such or that their files should be covered by "confidentiality"or "mother's privacy."

Peru - Céline Giraud - "Rayon de soleil" case.

Céline Giraud, a Frenchwoman born in Peru, was adopted by French parents when she was 16 days old through the NGO, Rayon de Soleil de l'Enfant Étranger. Up to 24 years, she believed that her biological parents had abandoned her for lack of means to raise her. But by finding her birth family in 2004, she discovered that she was stolen from her parents and 25 other Peruvian children adopted in France, Switzerland and Holland in the early 80s, were also stolen from their parents. Her story was written by the French journalist Emily Trevert in her book.
Central African Republic - Oscar and Marlène - "Rayon de Soleil" case

In 2003, a couple in France adopted Oscar and Marlène, aged 5 and 2, from Central African Republic. The adoptive parents were told by the association, Rayon de Soleil de l'enfant étranger, that their mother was dead and their father disappeared. It turns out that they were 10 and 5 years old, and they had living parents and five siblings. The children were told they would study in France and would go back to Africa.
