김씨는 이날 오후 4시쯤 서울 강남구 우리은행 개포동역 지점에 흰색 가발을 쓰고 들어가 창구 직원을 위협, 수표와 현금 등 모두 2000여만원을 강탈한 혐의를 받고 있다. 그는 이 과정에서 철제 아령으로 청원경찰 김모(43)씨의 뒷머리를 때리고 가스총을 빼앗았다고 경찰은 밝혔다. 은행 직원들은 "범행 당시 김씨가 한국말로 '돈을 여기에 담으라'고 외쳤다"고 경찰에 말했다.

돈을 훔친 뒤 도주하기 위해 택시를 잡은 김씨를 막은 것은 택시기사 차모(65)씨였다. 차씨는 김씨가 자신의 택시에 올라타 빼앗은 가스총으로 위협하자, 김씨의 오른팔을 붙잡으며 끈질기게 저항했다. 김씨는 112 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰에게 현장에서 격투 끝에 붙잡혔다. 그는 경찰 조사에서 "부모가 미국 시민권을 신청하지 않아, 현재 나는 한국 국적"이라면서 "미국에 있는 동안 애리조나를 무대로 활동하는 멕시코 갱단에서 중간 보스로 활동하다, 당국에 적발돼 추방당했다"고 말했다.
