Haut de la Garenne reuse ‘insensitive’, say care leavers

THE decision to reopen Haut de la Garenne for military use while police investigations are ongoing is ‘insensitive to victims’.

That is the view of the Jersey Care Leavers’ Association who are critical of the fact that sections of the former children’s home, which has been the centre of an abuse inquiry for over a year, will reopen for use by visiting military groups.

A group of Territorial Army soldiers is scheduled to stay there for two weeks in June.

A spokesperson from the JCLA said: ‘We are surprised that an announcement has been made on future use of the premises without any meaningful consultation with care leavers who suffered abuse in the building.’
