Island deputy police chief starts

public

The new deputy head of Jersey's police force has taken up his post, replacing Lenny Harper, who is retiring.

As part of his work, David Warcup will have overall responsibility for the strategic and policy aspects of the island's historic abuse enquiry.

Initially he will be supported by Detective Inspector Alison Fossey, who will handle its operational aspects.

A recruitment process for a permanent post to handle the enquiry's operational requirements is under way.

Mr Warcup was previously deputy chief constable of Northumbria.

Det Insp Fossey has previously acted as a deputy for Lenny Harper.

The new police officer who will look after the historic abuse enquiry in Jersey will come from outside the island, Chief Officer Graham Power said.

The selection process for a permanent position to handle the operation began some weeks ago.

Applications by 27 senior detectives have been made into a shortlist of six and interviews begin on Tuesday.

Police are currently investigating abuse claims dating from the early 1960s to 1986.

There are more than 80 suspects in the inquiry, which is focused on the Haut de la Garenne former children's home. Three people have been charged so far.

The remains of at least five children have been found at Haut de la Garenne, police revealed last week.
