Jersey police find further bones

public

Police investigating claims of child abuse at a former Jersey children's home have uncovered more bone fragments and another child's tooth.

Previously, 30 bone fragments and seven milk teeth had been found at Haut de la Garenne during the inquiry.

The latest remains were discovered during the weekend, in one of the four underground chambers being searched.

Previous fragments found had been cut, suggesting a homicide or an unexplained death, police have said.

Deputy Chief Officer Lenny Harper, who is leading the investigation, said they have 70 suspects in their inquiry into claims, made by 116 people, of abuse at Haut de la Garenne between the early 1960s and 1986.

However, they have not announced a murder inquiry, saying more tests are needed.

Lenny Harper looked back at the first six months of the investigation with BBC Jersey's Matthew Price.

The latest discovery comes two weeks after it emerged fragments of a "skull" that initially sparked the search at Haut de la Garenne were now believed to be pieces of wood or coconut shell.

On Tuesday police on the island rejected suggestions they had "sensationalised" this original find.

No-one has been arrested in connection with the investigation, which began 18 months ago.

However, the investigation did uncover allegations of indecent assault against a former home warden, Gordon Wateridge.

He appeared before magistrates earlier in May, facing three charges, to which he has yet to enter a plea.
