Mom denies shaking adopted son to death

Neighbors are rallying around Jonathan Wingo.

Rebecca Lopez reports A Dallas mother is in jail accused of killing her adopted baby boy. The child was adopted from Guatemala less than a year ago when he was just 6 months old. Police say the baby died from a severe head injury.

Friends spent the day trying to comfort Jonathan Wingo at his northeast Dallas home. His adopted son, Jackson, who he brought from Guatemala just nine months ago is dead and his wife Kelly is in jail. Police believe she may have shaken the child to death. "I just can't believe this happened," he said.

According to court documents obtained by News 8 the mother says she "left the baby sitting on his mat on the floor in front of the TV." She claims she left the baby alone for only a minute to let the dog in. Court documents say," the mother picked up the baby and his body was limp and his head thrown back as if he had no neck muscle." "She claims she shook the child and said, 'what's wrong, what's wrong?'" But police say autopsy results show the child died from a severe head injury consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

What shocks friends and neighbors most is that the family spent months trying to adopt baby Jackson from Guatemala to give him a better life and the mother, who wanted him, is accused of taking his life. "They are the most loving family. They were always so nice," said a neighbor.
