Tories accused of trying to hide foster care abuse

Instead of making kids in foster care safer, the provincial government is making it harder for the public to find out about abuse, says the NDP.

NDP MLA Rachel Notley charged that proposed changes to child welfare laws will restrict access to reports of abuse and neglect of children in foster care.

The proposed amendments come after the government was shamed by the NDP for leaving statistics on scores of alleged abuses unreleased for three years.

The allegations were revealed last month only after Notley publicly released quarterly reports of the children's advocate, which list complaints of illegal restraint techniques used on kids in care, kids sexually assaulting other kids, and children being placed in inappropriate or even dangerous homes because nothing better was available.

"I'm shaking my head in complete exasperation that they'd do this," said Notley. "Perhaps naively, I thought the government would react to what we had to say and make changes to introduce more accountability."

The proposed changes would, according to government briefing notes, prevent family members and the public from reading stories of abuse or neglect given by children in care to the province's Child Advocate office.

Those accounts would not be open for any use, including as evidence against the government if someone sues them for bad practices.

However, John Mould, Alberta's Child Advocate, said he recommended the change more than a year ago to give kids greater assurance knowing their stories would never be released.

He said the changes would not remove any public information because only parties with a stake in the case can see the files, as it stands.

Children and Youth Services spokesman Trevor Coulombe compared the files to medical records that people would not want shared, even in court.

He said accusations of a government cover-up are, "a misinterpretation or misunderstanding of what this (law) demands."

While she's waiting to see the wording of the amendments, Notley said a twist of language could mean case files could be kept out of statistics showing the number and types of abuse cases in the system.

"As long as the advocate is under the thumb of the minister and acts as a government spokesperson, we cannot trust we will get all the information we need," she said.

Yes, by all means, keeping abuse secret is indeed the best way to teach a child there is no shame in being the victim of a crime committed by another.

[I swear this world has gone completely insane!]

Well there is a

Well there is a surprise..... after the Ab government abused the shit out of us placed us with pedophiles... and even sent many of us to our deaths... I could see how they would want to cover that up for the future... cause after the 2nd abuse lawsuit they are facing right now with myself and many others...over government "care" they want to make sure they don't get sued again so what do they do? Well.... just like any criminal they try to hide their actions behind lies and twisted words... while hiding behind lawyers.... instead of having the courage and wisdom and facing us... their victims...

If the government is going to act like criminals and cover up for child molesters.... or ditch kids in shelters and leave them for dead... then they need to be shut down...

A government is supposed to work for the people ...instead it's working against it's victims...
It constantly lies about just about everything. They are the lowest of the lows...
By this act alone they have drawn a line in the sand...

Any government who is going commit these crimes and then try to cover up it's crimes.... is not a government that we can rely on... it's not a government we can have faith in.... or is a government that will lead us into a prosperious and safe future. Instead it is a government full of corruption, lies and deceat. And has been sued twice for doing the same thing to children... first it was the natives ....now it's the poor's...

They are criminals NOT GOVERNMENT. They deserve no respect from anyone except other child abusers and child molesters...

The rich parading around pretending to be our governments can not be trusted. That is the only thing we know for sure.... but most were to cowardly to do something about it.

That is about to change.

:)

The government is making their push for the right to abuse children and hide it.... so we are gonna push right back.

Cowardly child abusing scum bags like those in government should be in jail... not making decision on behalf of everyone else... let alone around children.

What was once a democracy... or at least on it's way to being one... has turned into a dictatorship run by the wastes of skin called the upper-class... most their respectable high paying jobs come off the backs of the poor.... many make their living destroying everything they touch...
make their living defending pedophiles and murders or judging them...

How can one respect such people? And call them leaders?

I don't... they are the kinda bullies I used to beat up in school and then on the streets... the ones who picked on the poor and defenseless.....

The Government are criminals............ period. And should be treated as such...

Only a completely dumb ignorant sloth... would see the government as there to help it's people... their currant actions of trying to hide what horrible abuse children went threw at their hands are proof positive of this.
