Reports of child trafficking in name of adoption "malafide"

New Delhi, Aug 25: The Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) on Monday termed reports of alleged child trafficking in the name of adoption as "malafide" and said the case mentioned was already with the CBI.

The agency, which is the apex body in matters of adoption, clarified that strict action was taken against the said agency on the receipt of complaints and it was delicensed in 2002 itself.

"A criminal case was also filed against the said agency on the receipt of the complaint and it was delicenced in 2002 itself," CARA Chairman, J K Mittal said.

The case is under investigation by CBI. No such incident has been reported in recent times against any Indian adoption agency by any foster parents or an agency from any part of the world, he said.

Hinting at malafide intentions behind the reports, Mittal said, "this will hurt the process of adoption from India to foreign countries".

Activities of all adoption agencies based in India are strictly monitored and children are placed for adoption only after thorough investigation of their records.

Around 1,000 children are adopted each year from India to foreign countries.
