Qld Govt still awaiting proof of Indian adoption racket

Aug 26, 2008

The Queensland Government says there is no proof yet of an Indian adoption racket affecting a Queensland family.

An Indian court approved the adoption of a child by the family seven years ago, but it has now alleged the child had been kidnapped.

Child Safety Minister Margaret Keech has told Parliament her Department conducted a review of Indian adoptions last year and has begun a second audit of adoptions from 1995 to this year.

"I do stress that [at this] stage these are allegations," she said.

"Queensland has not been provided with any documented evidence that any child adopted into Queensland was kidnapped in India.

"However this is a terrible predicament for a Queensland family who loves their adopted child and also for the Indian mother who has lost her child."

The Opposition says the Minister has admitted that Labor knew last year there were serious issues with adoptions from India.
