Va. Manslaughter Case

The Washington Post

September 13, 1989

A three-judge panel of the Virginia Court of Appeals yesterday reversed the involuntary-manslaughter conviction of Karen Diehl in the death of her mentally retarded adopted son.

Diehl, whose family lived in a converted school bus in Virginia Beach at the time of her son's death, will get a new trial. She is being held in the Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland County.

The panel also reversed Diehl's convictions for abduction, felony child neglect and assault and battery because a prospective juror was not stricken from the panel, even though the juror acknowledged his opinion of the case was influenced by the news media.
