Foster Parents To 76 Charged

BEND, Ore. - A couple who gained national fame as foster parents to 76 children from around the world have been arraigned on charges they mistreated many of the children and let three die through neglect.

Dennis and Diane Nason of Sisters are expected to plead not guilty to the charges.

A Deschutes County grand jury returned a 27-count indictment against the couple this week, including charges of manslaughter, criminal mistreatment, forgery, theft and racketeering.

"We are totally not guilty," Diane Nason said.

Two of their sons claimed at the arraignment that the allegations are false.

The Nasons' 33-bedroom house was home to as many as 62 children at one time. The charges against them arose from abuse allegations by a teacher who worked in a private school operated by the Nasons.
