Man convicted in beating death of adopted child

public

A jury on Thursday convicted a man of the beating death of his adopted daughter.

Troy Sweeting was found guilty of manslaughter in the February 25, 2007 death of three-year-old Jennifer Pinder.

Prosecutors said Sweeting lost his temper with the toddler because she urinated in her bed.

Sweeting’s estranged wife, Rosetta Sweeting-Cruz, said she left the child with her husband at their apartment on Baillou Hill Road south on February 21.

When she returned home later that evening, her husband was gone and she discovered bruises all over the child’s body. Jennifer died at the Princess Margaret Hospital on February 25.

In a statement to police, Sweeting said he beat the girl with a belt and PVC pipe because she was stubborn and urinated in her bed.

Sweeting said he made that statement to police under duress.  He claimed he was not home when the beating allegedly occurred.

Justice Roy Jones remanded Sweeting, who was on bail during the trial, to prison to await sentencing.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 15.

Anthony Delaney and Charles Newbold prosecuted.

Raymond Rolle represented Sweeting.
