Neenah Woman Sentenced in Son's Scalding

public

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- A former Pittsfield woman was sentenced Tuesday to 16 months in prison on child abuse charges for failing to seek treatment of the severe burns one of her sons suffered from being placed in scalding hot bath water.

Lisa Sangraw, 39, now of Neenah, was allowed to say goodbye to four of her children who attended the sentencing hearing. She stroked their hair and repeatedly said "You're going to be OK" as she hugged each one.

The child abuse victim, now 8, was not in court and remains in foster care separated from both parents.

Sangraw's estranged husband, Raymond Sangraw, 39, is due in court Feb. 29 for a pretrial hearing in the felony case against him.

A criminal complaint alleges he placed the boy in the scalding bath last March and held him under the water.

Lisa Sangraw found him holding the boy under the shower and then helped treat the burns on the child's legs, feet and buttock, the complaint said.

The parents treated the boy at home for five weeks until staff members at his school noticed odd behavior and got social service personnel involved.

Medical reports indicated the boy was within minutes of death due to infection and septic shock by the time he arrived at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin near Milwaukee for treatment, prosecutors said.

Brown County Circuit Judge William Atkinson described the boy's wounds as "horrific injuries in a tragic set of circumstances."

He said he considered a psychologist's report that said Lisa Sangraw had a dependant personality disorder that likely played a role in failing to notify authorities or seeking medical help.
