NORTHBRIDGE —

A 45-year-old Whitinsville woman charged with child rape was being held last night on $10,000 cash bail, police said.

Linda M. Mayotte, of 67 Laura Lane, was arrested at home at 1:13 p.m. yesterday on a warrant charging her with six counts of statutory child rape and four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under age 14.

Lt. Timothy Labrie said police are not identifying whether the victim is a boy or girl, how old the child is, or the victim's relation to Mayotte.

"The child is known to her," Labrie said last night.

The arrest capped a two-week investigation that started when the victim and the state Department of Child and Family Services contacted Northbridge Police with the rape allegations, Labrie said.

The rape and assaults continued over a two-year period, the lieutenant said.

Mayotte had no previous criminal record, he said.

She was also charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, police said.

"When the detectives were serving the arrest warrant, the suspect struggled with the officers," Labrie said.

Mayotte is scheduled to be arraigned today in Uxbridge District Court.
