COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A 20-month-old girl is dead and her parents have been charged with her murder.

Alexis Long was just a year and a half old when her young life was changed forever. She had just been adopted by Columbus couple Timothy and Jennifer Long. Then that new life suddenly ended.

She was living with the Long's at their home on 43rd Street. According to police reports Alexis was taken to the Medical Center by her new parents Sunday night.

The police report says doctors discovered multiple bruises on the baby and said she appeared to be suffering from a severe head trauma. She was listed in critical condition.

The report also says when baby Alexis's condition didn't improve she was rushed to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. The little girl died at the hospital Tuesday night.

That's when the Columbus Police Department began their investigation into the baby's death. The child's adoptive parents were questioned in the case. Police say their stories did not add up to the types of injuries the baby girl suffered.

Jennifer Long, 35, has been charged with murder, while her husband Timothy Long, 46, has been charged with cruelty to children.

Timothy and Jennifer Long remain in the Muscogee County Jail. They will appear in Recorder's Court Saturday morning.
