BRISTOW, Va. (WUSA) -- A boy ran away from home after his parents beat him, Prince William County Police said on Thursday.

The boy was found at around 1:00 a.m. on the 9200 Block of Glen Meadow Lane in Bristow, early Wednesday morning, ringing a doorbell, police said.

"Caller reported to police that the victim, an 8 year old boy, had rang their doorbell and appeared to be lost. Fire & Rescue were called to check on the child who appeared to have severe bruising all over his body consistent with physical abuse. The child was transported to the Western District Station until parents could be located," police said in a news release.

Amy Kathleen Sweeney, 41, of Bristow, called the police at around 5:30 a.m. to report the boy missing, police said. That's when police responded to the home and arrested her and her husband, Matthew Sweeney, 39, for child abuse.

"The investigation further revealed that the abuse has been occurring on a constant basis. Detectives from the Physical Abuse Unit obtained warrants against both accused individuals who were arrested without incident. The victim has since been removed from the household and is in the custody of Child Protective Services," police said.

In addition to Felony Child Abuse charges, the Sweeneys have also been charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor charges. Both are being held on $20,000 bond.
