Clarification regarding bone fragments found in cellar

public

RELEASED TO MEDIA AT 19.35 PM ON MONDAY 12 MAY 2008

Dear all

Please could I clarify that although we are sure that the teeth found are from a child or children, (there are now five teeth, and we cannot be sure if they are from the same child) we have not said that the bone fragments found in the cellars are human - they could be human or animal.

In our press release of 22 April which has not changed, we said:

'We cannot be sure at this stage if the bone is human or animal and it will be forwarded to the UK for tests.

The teeth could have come from the same child although further tests will be necessary to try and ascertain if that is the case, and how the teeth might have come to be there.'

At least one website is reporting that we have found human bones. Can I please stress again that at this stage, we are awaiting confirmation of whether they are human or animal.

As we said in our press release of this afternoon, we will not comment on the preliminary results.

Please see www.jersey.police.uk for all releases.

Many thanks,

Lou
