Media update from Haut de la Garenne - AM

public

Monday 17 March 2008

RELEASED TO MEDIA AT 8.25 AM ON MONDAY 17 MARCH 2008

  • A short update regarding work at Haut de la Garenne today and about the abuse inquiry in general.
  • On Monday (today) a call handler from the NSPCC from London was due to start work with us - this is to relieve other call handlers and help with the workload of the dedicated historic abuse team at Police HQ.
  • We would encourage people to ring in to the incident room on 0800 735 7777 where their calls will be taken.
  • Anyone who rings in will be treated with sensitivity by the team and we would urge anyone to call us who has not done already.
  • At Haut de la Garenne, meanwhile, the team are set to continue their work in the second cellar, which has to be done slowly and painstakingly as the rubble is taken out. It is estimated that at the moment, the team will be working in the second cellar all of the week of 17 March.
  • There are no planned press briefings/media facilities today.
  • Please note I am in a meeting all of tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday) but if there are any updates we will let you know.
