Jersey officers find more teeth

public

A further 14 milk teeth have been found at the Haut de la Garenne former care home in Jersey by police investigating abuse allegations.

It brings the number of children's teeth found at the site to 27.

Tests are being conducted on 26 that were "very unlikely to have come out naturally before death", police say.

All so far have been found in cellars, apart from one retrieved from a cistern in the building's courtyard, which police do not believe to be suspicious.

Foreseeable future

Initial tests showed five of the teeth found at the site had come from at least two children, police said.

Of the 30 bone fragments unearthed, tests have found that some were cut while others had been burnt.

Deputy Chief Officer Lenny Harper, who is leading the investigation, said they had 70 suspects in their inquiry into claims, made by 116 people, of abuse at Haut de la Garenne between the early 1960s and 1986.

But officers have not announced a murder inquiry, saying more tests are needed to establish how old the remains are.

Jersey police are continuing to sift through the rubble on the site.
