A Canton Township woman has been sentenced to 20-35 years in prison in the death of her 2-year-old foster daughter.

A jury found Carole Ann Poole guilty of second-degree murder in January. She also was sentenced to 10-15 years for first-degree child abuse.

The 42-year-old Poole was charged in the 2006 death of Allison Newman, who died of brain injuries.

Poole claimed Allison died from injuries after she fell 12 feet from a balcony onto the first floor of their home during a game. Authorities said the death followed months of abuse.

Before she was sentenced, Poole read a statement in which she apologized to her family and to Allison's biological family. "I am deeply remorseful for the pain I have caused," she said.
