Mother Nabbed in Tot’s Death

Higier's husband [Louis Higier] initially laughed when police questioned him about the child's injuries, [Robert W. Nelson] said. Then he said, "I probably shouldn't say anything. I probably should get a lawyer," according to Nelson.

Nelson said Higier did not offer a specific explanation for how her little boy was so seriously injured. She told state police she left the sleeping child alone when she drove her husband to an MBTA station in Quincy Tuesday morning. She said she returned to their home at 100 Beech St. in Braintree in time for the boy to wake up about 8 a.m.

Nelson said the babysitter told investigators [Zachary Higier] had been injured in the past, and when she asked Higier about it, Higier told her she sometimes got angry at the boy, particularly when he wouldn't swallow his food.
