Malawi-USA-Madonna Malawi court denies Madonna adoption, cites her single parent status
APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) The Malawi High Court sitting in the capital Lilongwe on Friday denied granting international pop superstar Madonna the right to adopt Mercy James, aged 3, due to her new status as a single parent.
In her ruling, Judge Esme Chombo said Madonna divorced her husband Guy Ritchie recently, therefore as a single parent she could not raise the child alone.
\\\"The child needs parental care from both mother and father, so the adoption cannot be granted due to such reasons,\\\" she said.
In addition, the judge said, David Banda, a Malawian child Madonna adopted in 2006, was still too young for the singer to be granted the right to adopt a second child.
Madonna (50), said to be the world wealthiest singer, wanted to adopt Mercy from the Kondanani Orphanage in the southern Malawi district of Thyolo.
There was no immediate public reaction from either Madonna or her lawyer Allan Chinula on the high court’s decision.
