MADONNA is just days away from adopting a second child from Malawi, The Sun can reveal.
The superstar singer, 50, is nearing the end of a 19-month battle to make “smiling angel” Mercy James legally hers.
She flies into the impoverished African country on Sunday and is determined to pick the youngster up.
Malawian officials confirmed that adoption papers had been filed and that proceedings would begin at a court in the capital Lilongwe next week.
Madge fell in love with Mercy, now four, after first spotting her in an orphanage in August 2007.
She has long talked of her desire for a sister for adopted son David Banda, three, insisting on a girl to “redress the balance.”
A source said that now the turmoil of her break-up with GUY RITCHIE was over she could “throw everything” into the battle to get Mercy.
But if she fails and the application is blocked by Mercy’s extended family there are FIVE OTHER little girls “on stand-by”.
The source added: “Madonna is determined that she will leave Malawi with a new daughter.
“She desperately wants Mercy but there are other orphans who need homes.”
Madonna’s spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg had no comment yesterday.
But last week Mercy’s granny Lucy Chekechiwa, 61, said she would fight to stop the tot being taken away.
