Got this message and passed it on... Dear Friends, By now you may have heard the shocking news from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, thatMrs. Haregewoin Teferra has died suddenly after a short illness. Many of us aregrieving, yet we have no time to spare: 59 children survive her, many of themtoddlers and babies, the majority HIV- positive. True to character, Worldwide Orphans Foundation has stepped into the breach.Having already assumed full custody of the 42 HIV-positive kids, WWO ispreparing to take in the 17 HIV- negative children, as well. Most of them areunder one year of age. These babies and toddlers are still at the Atetegebcompound; their caregivers have stayed on; Dr. Sophie is patching together abasic emergency feeding plan for them right now. These heroic measures come at high cost: we estimate $300,000 will be requiredin the coming year (about $4,600 per child) to cover food, healthcare andmedicine, education, clothing, and caregivers. Once their basic needs are met,the children's paperwork will be sorted out; some may be eligible for adoption,others may have extended families in a position to allow the children to return.But that is for the future. The crisis is now: getting these children fed andclothed, paying the salaries of loving caregivers to act as stand-ins for theirlate parents, making sure there is no break in the life-saving healthcareprovided by WWO.
