E.U. Officials Threaten To Suspend Negotiations with Romania  Message List

Daily Telegraph yesterday announced that The European Commission had
given Romania an ultimatum, demanding that Romania immediately stop
international adoptions or risk seeing accession negotiations halted.
The newspaper refers to a letter that Commissioner Gunther Verheugen
reportedly sent to Prime Minister Adrian Nastase to warn him that The
Romanian Government had failed to observe E.U. human rights criteria.

Diego de Oreja, spokesman for Commissioner Verheugen, said Romania must
observe the international child adoption moratorium. The plot thickens
as Baroness Emma Nicholson on Tuesday added a motion to her own report
on Romania asking that E.U. suspend negotiations with this country
pending The Romanian Government's ensuring sustainable reform, an
independent justice system, a viable program against corruption and
complete human rights observance.
