A better future for Colombian girls

Where?
Colombia is a country that has been involved, for over forty years, in a civil war between the government and left-wing extremist groups. The Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia; FARC) are certainly one of the most representative of these groups. During the Cold War, they were supported by Russia, China, and Cuba, whereas now they self-finance by controlling the drug trafficking market and by kidnappings. The government, on the other hand, has economically supported paramilitary groups in an attempt to combat the rebels, but they have only worsened the conflict. In such situations, it is generally the women and children who must undergo the greatest difficulties. The project will be done in the city of Medellin, where the condition of women appears particularly critical, especially when one considers that one in two girl, under 15 years old, has experienced sexual violence.

What?
The aim of the project is to provide a basic education for girls between 7 and 18 years old in order to permit them to integrate themselves, in the future, into the world of work. More precisely, there will be alphabetisation courses and a course of entering the world of work that will have, as its goal, to improve not only the technical, intellectual, and physical capacities of the students, but also the human capacities so that they may develop not only from a professional point of view, but also a personal one.

For who?
The beneficiaries of the project will be 225 Colombian girls between the ages of 7 and 18 years who form part of the lower classes of the population of Medellin. Of these girl, around a hundred will attend the alfabetisation course to allow their assimilation into society, while the others will take part in the course regarding assimilation into the world of work.
