KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development ministry will look into improving the Adoption Act 1952 to make it easier for people to adopt, its minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said.

"But we need to do a thorough study on this and also to ensure that the adopted child is showered with care and love,'' she said.

She added that childless couples who intended to adopt should go through the right process.

"We have rules and regulations concerning the adoption process," she said.

Slamming the recently uncovered baby-for-sale racket in Johor, she said such culture should not even exist in the country.

"The ministry is shocked and worried about what happened in Johor involving the baby-for-sale syndicate," she told pressmen after launching the Women Journalists' Association of Malaysia (Pertama) inaugural treasure hunt here yesterday.

Dr Ng said what was more shocking was the fact that fertility clinics and the professionals, if reports were true, were involved in this syndicate.

As a doctor herself, Dr Ng said she was sad to hear that doctors were involved in the racket. "I am sure the Health Ministry will conduct an investigation on these doctors, " she said.
