Description of the NGO

The Italian Center for Children Aid known in Italy as Centro Italiano Aiuti all'Infanzia (CIAI) is an Italian international NGO officially registered in Italy in 1968 as the Italian Center for Inter-Country Adoption. Later on, CIAI obtained a status of non-profit organization on December 16th, 1981 and became NGO on August 2nd, 2000. Currently, CIAI's head office is in Milan, Italy.

Since 1968 over 1600 children from different countries including Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, India, Peru, Dominican Rep., Romania, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam have found new families through inter-country adoption arranged by our NGO. In addition to this, 4.374 children are supported through the sponsorship program in Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Poland, India, Cambodia and Vietnam.

CIAI was registered as an international NGO in Ethiopia at the Ministry of Justice on November 14th 2003 and signed an operational agreement with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) on January 9, 2004 in order to undertake inter-country adoptions (adoption of Ethiopian children by people from other countries) for a period of three years. Following this CIAI signed a partnership agreement for the Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Project with the Addis Ababa Social and NGO Affairs Office (SNGOAO) of the Social and Civil Affairs Bureau of the Addis Ababa City Government on November 9, 2004. CIAI also supports children through local NGOs and children's homes. At the end of 2004, over 908 children were being supported through sponsorship.

Activities and areas of intervention in Ethiopia

The OVC Project is planned to be implemented over a period of three years. The major components of the Orphan and Vulnerable Children Project are the Child Sponsorship Program that is provided through the SNGOAO as well as the Shelter Program, the Inter-country Adoption Program, and the Direct Sponsorship Program which are executed by CIAI Office in Addis Ababa. The OVC Project targets vulnerable children in three districts of Addis Ababa city, namely Arada, Yeka and Cherkos.

CIAI, with two other NGOs, is also providing financial and technical support for a joint project to provide educational support for children in Gulele Sub City in Addis Abeba and Chiroo in West Hararghe, Oromia Region. The project in Gulele will be implemented through Almaz Children and Family Support Organization (ACFSO) and the one in Chiroo through CISP (an Italian NGO with a branch in Ethiopia). The duration of the project extends from May 2004 to April 2006.

Support through child sponsorship is also provided through the Integrated Family Life Organization (IFSO) a local NGO which is working throughout Addis Ababa and especially in Kebeles 16 and 17 of Yeka Sub City. The project will be implemented within a period of three years from January 2004 to December 2007.
