CANTON, Mich. -- The trial for a woman charged in the death of her 2-year-old foster child began Monday.
Carol Poole, 41, of Canton Township faces life in prison on charges of felony murder, first-degree child abuse and involuntary manslaughter.
Poole is accused of killing Allison Newman. Police said the toddler fell 12 feet from a second-floor balcony in the couple's suburban Detroit home last September and died two days later.
Poole maintains that the child's death was an accident and has had several explanations for Newman's injuries. At one point, she told police the child fell from the bed and bumped her head on the vanity, police said.
