A 13 year old ethnic Roma boy adopted from Russia was confined to in his room and deprived of food and schooling by Paul and Debbie Salvetti, his adoptive father and stepmother, during a 3 month period in 2007. Earlier Debbie was alleged to have hit the boy with a frying pan and baseball bat. Debbie Sue Salvetti was charged with two counts of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. Paul Joseph Salvetti faced one charge. In 2009, Paul and Debbie took a joint Alford plea and were sentenced to 20 to 33 months in jail. Paul filed several appeals requesting to withdraw his Alford plea The boy is referred to as Pesha or TS in the pleadings.
There were 3 or 4 other children in the home, including the boy's sister, possibly adopted in Peru.
The boy was adopted as an infant or toddler by Paul Salvetti and the now deceased Leslie Salvetti, who passed away in 1998.

Boy purchased from a Russian woman at 5 days old in 2005 by an Australian gay couple (Mark J. Newton and Peter Truong) was sexually abused by them, by other men, and used in pornography before he was 2 years old until he was removed from their care in 2011 at age 6. He was abused in numerous countries including Australia, USA, Germany and France. When originally arrested in California by the FBI, the men claimed they were being targeted because they were homosexual.
It is not clear how long the men were in the US before the child was removed from their care. The boy was originally claimed to be the biological son of Newton conceived by surrogacy in Russia. He may have been adopted by one of the men while they were in California using fake paperwork.
Mark J. Newton (Australian-USA dual citizen), 42, was sentenced to 40 years in prison and $400,000 in restitution to the child. His boyfriend, Peter Truong (Australian), 36, pleaded guilty but has not yet been sentenced.
Three-year-old boy adopted (together with his brother Kristopher) from Russia by Alan and Laura Shatto, died a few days after his birth day. Preliminary evidence showed that the boy suffered multiple injuries to his head, limbs, abdomen and internal organs prior to death. A grand jury concluded the boy's death was accidental, and no charges were filed. Max Shatto was adopted in November 2012, just two-and-a-half months before his death.
Dennis was born Russia and adopted by Russian citizens in 2003. In 2004 he was left by his adoptive parents in the Dominican Republic with an unrelated man. Denis ended up in a Orphanage in DR until he was returned to Russia in 2010
Six children (four of whom from Russia, and 2 of whom are from Guatemala) adopted by Martin and Kathleen O'Brien were allegedly abused by their adoptive parents.The Russian children were bio siblings adopted in 2004 at approximately ages 5-11. Some of the children were homeschooled.
The O'Briens are charged with:
Stripping the children naked as part of punishment.
Dragging the children by their arms while the children were naked.
Kicking the children in the groin.
Spraying the children in the face and on the neck and chest with pepper spray.
Bending a child’s arm into a “compliance-type” arm bar.
Hitting the children with a stick.
Slapping the children in the face.
Stabbing one child in the hand with a knife.
Grabbing children by the throat and lifting them off the ground.
Striking children in the groin with a knee.
Picking one child off the floor by an ear causing the ear to tear and bleed.
Striking children with a ruler.
Placing one child in a “bin” while Martin O’Brien struck the outside of the bin with a log.
Striking one child in the chest with a flashlight
Forcing the adopted children to eat frozen loaves of bread off the floor before bedtime while the biological children watched.
Forcing the children to stand naked in the snow three to four times a year.
Locking the children in a bedroom for four to five days at a time.
8-year-old boy adopted from Tula, Russia in June 2006 at age 3 was systematically abused by his adoptive mother. His adoptive parents, Navy Lieutenant Commander Matthew Sweeney and Amy Sweeney, had 5 bio children and Daniel. All 6 children were homeschooled. Daniel Alexander was beaten with a belt and electric cord. According to Russian sources, prior to the adoption, Daniel lost an eye due to abuse while in his biological mother's home in Russia.
For ignoring the abuse, Matthew Sweeney pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and received a suspended sentence of 60 days. Amy Sweeney, pleaded guilty to felony abuse and neglect. Her sentencing will be in Dec 2013

7-year-old boy from Magadan (Russia), adopted by Gary and Jessica Beagley, was forced to drink Tabasco sauce as a disciplinary measure. Beagley, a member of the LDS church, talked about her parenting style on the TV show "Dr Phil", November 17, 2010.
Seven-year-old boy, adopted from Russia by Michael and Nanette Craver, was beaten to death by his adoptive parents. Together with his twin sisters Elizabeth (Dasha), the boy was adopted from the Chelyabinsk region, in 2003. Both children were home schooled.
Nathaniel body had nearly 80 external injuries – 20 of them to his head. Cravers were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and conspiracy.

Gleb Ageyev was adopted at age 3 along with a sister Polina. He was beaten by his mother, his injuries included head trauma, genital mutilation, burns and missing front teeth. This was a domestic Russian adoption.
4 year old girl adopted as an infant in Russia was molested by her older brother from Romania adopted at age 7. The boy spent his first 2 years tied to an orphanage crib, and was beaten and molested at a state-run orphanage and foster homes. He repeatedly sexually assaulted his sister and threatened to kill her and their mother.
13 to 16 children, mainly internationally adopted, were neglected by Diana Lyn Groves (aka Diana L. Roll, Diana Graves, Diana Martin, Spike Martin) after she was granted custody of them though private arrangements with the adoptive parents. She bound children with duct tape, beat them with a tennis racket, and disciplined 1 girl by putting her in a clothes dryer.
The 13 children removed in November 2003 included her youngest 2 biological children (16 and 13 years), a 2 year old child adopted at 5 months in Texas, and 10 other children. Six of these children had guardianship papers, 1 did not, and 3 are unknown status. Their ages were: 13, 11, 9, unknown, 9, 9, 7, 6, 1, 4 months. The 7 year old was from Poland. Other children were reported to "look like" they were from Eastern Europe, Ethiopia and Asia. She was previously charged with felony theft in 1989, fraud in 1991 and a felony charge of failure to appear in court in 1992. She allegedly operated under names such as Adoptions By Granny and Loving Choices placement agency. Besides the 3 children in the home in November 2003, there were at least 3 other children placed in the home by guardianship.
It appears she pleaded guilt to felony neglect of a dependent for the 2003 issues. She was apparently released by 2006
In 2006 Ms. Groves took $14,000 from 7 people saying she operated an adoption agency. She was sentenced to 3 years.
