Girls adopted by Dwight and Janet Solander

3 girls adopted by Dwight and Janet Solander were abused by their adoptive parents.

The abuse was first discovered by a nanny, who reported the case with the Nevada, authorities. The children were subsequently sent off to a boarding school in Florida.

An 11-year-old boy in foster care with Wanda Sue Larson and Dorian Harper was found on the porch in his underwear, handcuffed and a dead chicken tied around his neck. Wanda Sue Larson and Dorian Harper also had four adopted children which were underfed, and regularly chained to pieces of rail road. Larson was a supervisor for the Union County Department of Social Services, North Carolina.

10-year-old boy, adopted by Jennifer Louise Barnes was sexually tortured by his adoptive mother, burning his penis with a lighter and sodomizing him with a toothbrush, forcing dog feces into his mouth and taping it shut using duct tape.

Five girls adopted by Scott and Drew Anne Hamrick

Scott and Drew Anne Hamrick adopted five girls from foster care while having three sons of their own. Four of the girls were sexually abused by their adoptive father, while three were physically abused by their adoptive mother. The girls were locked up and starved. The adoptive mother knew about the sexual abuse, but did nothing in response.

Scott Hamrick committed suicide soon after investigations started. Drew Anne pleaded guilty to witness tampering.

Girl is care of Mary Mazalic and Derron Alexis

10-year-old girl adopted from foster care by a New York City woman, was systematically tortured and had food withheld by Mary E. Mazalic. For about a year. Mary was the live-in girlfriend of the girl's 43-year-old adoptive brother, Derron P. Alexis. The adoptive mother, Genevieve Alexis, who continued to collect adoption subsidies for her care, sent the girl to live with her son and Mazalic in Washington State after she objected to a NY school district placing the girl in special education classes.

The girl was beaten with extension cords, belts, wooden spoons, and wire. She was burned with cigarettes, held underwater, threatened with a knife and a gun. She was starved, had water restricted and was not given her prescription medicine. She missed 36 days of school. The then 10-year-old weighed 51 lbs when she was removed from Mary's "care". She gained 13 lbs in her 2 week hospital stay and 20lbs since being removed from the home.

In 2009, a 16 year old in care of Mazalic and Derron reported to CPS that he was abused.

Mazalic was sentenced to 30 years jail for first-degree assault of child, criminal mistreatment and witness tampering.
D. Alexis has been charged first-degree criminal mistreatment for beating her, withholding food and medication. He will face court in 2013.

Lilly Manning

At the time 15-year-old girl adopted by her great-aunt Lillian Manning, escaped from a closet she had been locked into. Prior to that she had been tortured by her adoptive mother and her adoptive mother's husband.

3 children adopted by John and Sonja Kluth

A 15-year-old and a 11-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl, adopted by John Edward Kluth and Sonja Kay Kluth, were allegedly beaten, choked, whipped, and burned.  In addition, the adoptive parents allegedly forced the youngsters to eat pet food, kept both boys confined to the basement, and locked the oldest son in a dog crate for up to two months.

According to news reports, the adoptive father claimed he and his wife were going to be accused of child abuse, but the children came to them already damaged.

The Canadian County Sheriff says the couple was receiving $4,500 a month support money from the state of Wisconsin, where they adopted the children before moving to Oklahoma.

Boy adopted by Alona and Rodger Hartwig

9-year-old boy, adopted by Alona and Rodger Hartwig was hospitalized for more than a month with burns and other severe injuries allegedly inflicted by his adoptive parents. H e was beaten, thrown into a creek, fed formula to keep off weight and often made to sleep without a blanket on a porch at the family’s Blachly home.

Adam Stein

Elsa Garcia aka Esther Alice Combs

 

Elsa Garcia was taken from Baptist Children's Home in Valparaiso, IN by Baptist Minister Joseph and Evangeline Combs in 1978 at 4 months old. Raised as Esther Combs, she was never adopted, although believed she had been. She was sexually abused by Joseph  Combs and beaten by Evangeline. Mrs. Combs beat her with a baseball bat, burned her with a curling iron and pulled out chunks of her flesh with pliers, causing more than 400 scars on her body. She was beaten with a hose. She was treated as a family servant and did not attend school or homeschool.

The Combs were arrested in 1998. Joseph Combs was sentenced to 114 years in prison for kidnapping, rape, assault and perjury. Evangeline Combs was sentenced to 65 years for kidnapping and child abuse.

Keyana Bravo-Hamilton and her sister Jasmine Hamilton



Siblings Keyana and Jasmine were abused by foster mother Dunia Soledad Moreno. When Keyana entered the hospital, large clumps of hair were missing and bruises covered her body. She had five cigar-sized burns. Three months after entering the home, Keyana died of blows to her stomach which ruptured her bowel. Jasmine was placed in a new home.
Dunia and foster father Armando Moreno-Garcia parents were convicted of neglect for not seeking medical care over the painful days it took for Keyana to die. Armando was an uncle of Jasmine and the girls were to be adopted.
